Happy 236th Birthday Marines!

This past Friday, we attended an ROTC Marine Corps Ball in Cambridge.  While I’ve been to many balls in my almost 17 years as a Marine wife, this one was different.  The room was full of young men and women (the youngest born in 1993) all who have made the decision to voluntarily join the military during a time of war.  Half their lives have been lived in a post September 11 world.  It warms my heart to see a new generation stepping up to serve and protect our country. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news on September 11.  And, I know these young men and women remember as well.  How scary it must have been to be little children and see the events unfold.  I remember the fear in the high school I was working at on that day.  I can only imagine how it must have been magnified for little ones.

As I watched the yearly video provided by the Commandant, I couldn’t help but get emotional at the sight of these young men and women flanking images of wars past and present.  But, this is how it goes.  New generations come, and old generations go.  The beauty of the military is that it instills a rich sense of history and heritage in its members.  These images mean something to them.  These images inspired them, as in past generations, to step forward and say, “I will.”

So on the eve of the 236th Marine Corps birthday, I say thank you to all those who have stepped forward to serve.  Happy Birthday Marines!

USS Missouri

As we gear up to leave paradise in a few weeks, we are trying to catch up on many of the “touristy” things we haven’t yet done.  Believe it or not, even when you live in paradise, daily life has a way of taking over!  Today’s “staycation” adventure took us to the USS Missouri for the first time.  We visited friends here in 2006, and I was very disappointed that we weren’t able to go aboard because I was pregnant (wasn’t quite up for climbing up and down stairs in the heat!).  Today was a beautiful day for the trip.  Although it was rather warm, there was plenty of wind to keep us cooled off.  The boys were beyond excited to get to go on a real battleship.

There isn’t anything quite at beautiful to me as Old Glory flying high.  As a military spouse and a military brat, the flag has always stood for something special.  I never tire of seeing photos of her.

This was taken from the gangplank boarding the ship.  What an amazing view of history.  Here you have both where WWII began for the United States and where it ended.  Every time I see the Arizona memorial, I can’t help but imagine what it must have been like on that December day.

After we toured the Missouri, we drove through a historical housing area to get this shot of the boys with the Arizona Memorial behind them.  While it would have been nice to have taken them to the memorial, I don’t think they are quite ready.  It’s such a place of quiet respect that I would be concerned their numerous questions would be a distraction for others or for us.  Having been there once, I can’t quite put in to words the respect I felt standing on board the monument.  The boys both know just enough about what happened there to be very curious, yet any explanation doesn’t really quell their questions just yet.  So, for now, we have this memory of them with the monument.  Fittingly, they have on their USS Arizona t-shirts and their USS Missouri dog tags.

I love this one because you can see just how much they love one another.  One thing I know for sure, those boys adore one another, and it makes my heart smile to capture these moments between them.

This is known as the Marine gun on board the Missouri.  Our guide shared with us that the Marines had their own special gun on board.

Take a moment to read the plaque.  It’s amazing to think of the history that occurred on board this ship.

Here We Go…

The move has officially begun! While we won’t be leaving paradise until July, we have already packed out because of the amount of time it takes for the household goods to get to the East Coast (53 days!). So, this means my lovely huge monitor that I love to edit my photos on is gone as well. (enter big sigh here). As a result, my blog posts and ability to edit photos will be diminished a bit.  My eyes do not like working on my laptop screen!

We anticipated the pack out to begin last Wednesday.  However, at 10 a.m. that day, we got a call telling us that we were not going to have the movers who had originally been scheduled for us and would have a new team the next day.  As a result, I had to pull out my handy dandy movers guide to make a few phone calls.  Apparently there was a contract that expired, and we had to be assigned a new moving company.  In the end, it all worked out fine, and we had a great team who took great care in packing our things.

On day two, the new company showed up on time with an empty truck!  This truck has made a few trips around the island in it’s lifetime!

I will admit I wasn’t ready for the emotions I was feeling as they started to pack us up and load our things on the truck.  Even though I grew up moving every three years as a child, our adult military life was spent mostly in North Carolina for 13 years.  We’ve been here just two and a half, and while I’m looking forward to our new adventures, I’m still sad about leaving this beautiful place.  I know that we will never again have the blessing of living in a home with a view of the ocean, of hearing the surf crash, watching whales from the lanai.  Our island experience has been a wonderful one.

As the day went on, the crates filled up.  I think we had about ten crates total over the course of two days.  Before we moved here, we got rid of quite a few things and put basically a rooms worth of furniture in storage.  Luckily, we will be able to keep those items in storage for another year and not get them back until we move on the the next duty station in 2012.

The boys really have been troopers through it all.  They have experienced a lot of change in the last few months between daddy coming home, company coming and going, stopping school, having daddy home on leave, and having all their things packed up.  You can tell, however, that this little guy was zonked out on move day!  It’s tough work being four!  He literally fell asleep sitting up.

Over There

One thing I love about living in Hawaii is that my boys can go outside pretty much every single day.  They love the outdoors.  I love watching them play.  I love their messy hair and boyish imperfections.  I love watching them play together.  They love playing outside.  Riding bikes.  Riding scooters.  Playing in the jungle in the front yard.  Whale watching.  Going for a walk.  I find that on days they don’t get to go outside that their personalities are a little “off.”  I truly believe that children need the opportunity to go outside and simply play with no distraction, no noise, no tv.  Just their imaginations and a few good friends.  Lately, the boys have been playing any variation of good guys vs. bad guys.  And, while we don’t let them have play guns, they simply improvise and make their own guns out of plastic blocks.   While I may not like it, I do appreciate the fact that they use their imaginations and creativity.  Today, they pretended they were Marines going to Afghanistan.  While this might seem heady stuff for four year olds, I think that it is simply their way of processing life as a military brat.  Their dad just returned from seven months away.  Their best friend next door has a dad over there now.  Their other best friend has a dad who is leaving in under two weeks.  This is their reality, and playing this way helps them work through their feelings of what it means to have people you care about off doing the business of war.

Stars and Stripes

I liked this shot so much, I wanted to play around with the processing a bit.  So, I pulled out a photo I took of our Christmas tree with my Lensbaby Composer lens and star aperture and layered it over the original.  I love the stars with the flag background and the vintage processing.  Such fun!
