Life. Captured.|December 15, 2011

I must admit, I haven’t been picking my camera up much lately because I’ve been trying to enjoy this month with the boys without the pressure of picking up the camera every second.   The boys are at such a fun age, and I figure we have a limited number of years to enjoy the innocence of the season.  You can see their excitement building every day between advent calendars and the elf on the shelf.  We really are having a fun time with the build up.  In the past few weeks, I’ve been seeing lots of posts lately on Pinterest and other photography sites where people have used Christmas lights in the photos.  I decided today to play around with the boys with the lights and with my new studio lights as well.  For these shots, it’s simply room lighting in order to capture the glow of the lights.  I really love these because I have no idea what they were talking about.  Taking photos of  my own kids is really hard for me!  So, I told them to tell each other secrets, and this is what I got.   They are such sweet boys!  It’s the little moments like this that years from now will mean the most.  And while they may not like all the pictures now, one day they will thank me for them, or at least their wives will!

Life. Captured.|December 8, 2012

Let me be honest.  I haven’t taken many photos this week.  With the holiday bustle and some really bad allergies, I haven’t wanted to get my camera out much.  I did, however, receive the lights and backdrops I ordered and am very excited about using them.  However, my two little men aren’t always willing to play model.  These are two VERY quick shots from the night I got the set up.  The boys literally sat still for about five minutes total.  Too add insult to injury, one of them managed to fall out of the little chair he was sitting in and almost bring the entire backdrop toppling down.  I can’t wait to try out some of the printed backdrops I received.  It’s exciting because it’s something new for me to learn and play with.  While I prefer natural light, living here in the cold makes getting out and taking outdoor photos can be a challenge.  We are, after all, not cold weather people!

Life. Captured.~New England Aquarium

This week we visited the New England Aquarium.  The boys had a fabulous time seeing all of the sea animals, which they miss from Hawaii.  My favorite was the jellyfish exhibit for two reasons: (1) most people aren’t that interested in jellyfish, so the exhibit was pretty empty, and (2) watching them was just very peaceful.  While I know they are dangerous, there is something beautiful in the fluidity of their movement.  It was just very relaxing to watch them float around.  And, I really did feel that most of them would turn toward my camera when I was taking pictures.  These were all taken with my camera right up to the glass of their tanks.  The darkness of the room combined with the tank lighting made it a bit of a challenge, but I’m happy with how these turned out.  So, without further ado, I present the dance of the jellyfish.

Life. Captured.~11/24/11

Let me start by saying Happy Thanksgiving!  I am so very thankful that our family of four could be together this year after being apart last year for the holidays.  My thoughts and prayers are with my friends who are without their husbands this year be it for training or deployment.  The holidays are never easy when one of you is missing.

While I know it’s a little early, we decided to beat the holiday “rush” and headed to the Polar Express this past weekend.   The holiday season is upon us, and there is nothing better than seeing it through the eyes of your child.  You can see that they believe in the magic of the season in their body language and expression.  I had such fun watching their excitement and their reactions to seeing Santa and to riding on the Polar Express.  I figure that this window of magic is so brief that we need to capitalize on this sweet, sweet time in their lives.

So, as we start this holiday season, I’m wishing everyone a little magic to make the season as memorable as it possibly can be!

Life. Captured. 11-17-11

I had my first family session in the Boston area this past weekend, and it was so much fun!  Beautiful location.  Beautiful family!  They are a great family, and as you can tell, one of the little ones is full of energy.  While I know this isn’t the perfectly posed family photo, I have to tell you that I absolutely love this.  For me, photos have always been a way to recall moments in time.  I can see a photo and remember exactly what was going on when it was taken.  Where I was, what I was doing.   I love the look here on dad’s face and the expression on his sister’s face as this energetic guy is not wanting anything to do with having his photo taken.

With two active boys of my own, I completely relate to this little guy.  It’s only been recently that my guys have become reluctantly willing to let me take their pictures.  But, even they still have their moments.  When I went to scout this location, I tried getting some photos of the boys while we were there just to test locations, light, etc.  But, as you cans see in the second photo, one of them was not at all willing.  He refused to participate and sat in the middle of the path in protest.  And, that’s ok because in that moment, I was able to capture who he is and how he was feeling.  For me, it’s those moments that matter most.
